| It's from the 1985 film by Elem Klimov - Come & See. The scene depicted is near the end of the film - where a whole village is massacred in the church. The director considered it his masterpiece and stopped making films after he finished it. Spielberg referenced it in Saving Private Ryan - the partial deafness after nearby explosions was first used in Come & See. The film depicts German soldiers and Soviet partizans and civilians in the Soviet republic of Belorussia (modern day Belarus) as seen through the eyes of a Belorussian boy - Florya Gaishun as played by Aleksei Kravchenko. I first saw it a couple of years ago, I though it was over-long, rambling and rather odd. However, I found that for weeks afterwards I was still thinking about the imagery, the depiction of life, death and murder in the war. I saw it again about a month ago & now find it one of the most compelling, terrifying and beautifully filmed, directed and acted war films ever made - it never flinches from showing just how monstrous the war was.
